Trevor is 22, with a world of energy, a mind alive with thoughts racing like lightning, and a kindness that touches everyone he meets. Diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, Trevor often felt like he was balancing on a tightrope, navigating the world with a unique rhythm all his own. Just last year, he was in high school, living with his parents and surrounded by the familiarity of home. But when he graduated, he was ready for a new challenge: becoming more independent and finding a new place called home.
Trevor’s parents had worried about this moment for years, his mother especially. She had once made plans with family members, who would have stepped in to help Trevor if ever needed, but time had taken them all. Now, she was haunted by the question: what would happen to Trevor if anything happened to her? He was brilliant in his own ways, but he needed support, socialization, and a place where he could thrive. That’s when she found Key Training Center, a place that felt like hope.
Moving to the Key Center was a big transition, but one Trevor found was filled with kind people and new friends.
He quickly became part of the Key Center’s Adult Day Training Program, where he spends weekdays engaging in activities designed to build daily living skills and picking up the little routines that make independent life possible. Every small achievement feels monumental, and the staff at the Key Center ensure he feels their support every step of the way.
He has joined several clubs, each one widening his social world. Trevor loves meeting new people, and he has a special gift – he remembers every person’s name. Whether it is a peer, a caregiver, or even the local store manager he only sees once a week, Trevor recalls their name and greets them like an old friend. It didn’t take long for him to become well-loved around the Key.
Trevor’s goal for himself is simple but mighty: he wants to become more independent. “I want to be better,” he tells his mother. He’s dreamed of developing a routine, of mastering skills that would help him “become a better man”, as he liked to say. His instructors and caregivers at Key Center take his goal to heart. Together, they work with him to establish his own daily schedule, complete with responsibilities and challenges that push him gently but steadily forward.
Trevor’s journey is one of transformation – not just of circumstance, but of spirit. He continues to need support, but with each passing day, Trevor builds the skills, friendships, and confidence that are helping him realize his dreams. Now, his mother knows Trevor has a place where he’s safe, where he’s valued, and where he’s thriving. And for Trevor, that means the world. He’s found a home – one that’s helping him step into the future he’s always hoped for.
