Thank you for being part of what makes the Key Center so special.
Warm regards, The Key Training Center Family
The Key Training Center was founded in 1966, and its history highlights the remarkable individuals and families who made it possible. Harry and Elsie Van Norwick were the driving force behind its creation, motivated by a desire for a better life for their child, described as “a dream realized by an earnest couple.” Mr. and Mrs. Skyler Orvis donated the original 40 acres located between Lecanto and Crystal River, which remains the site of the center today. Early support came from fundraisers, barbecues, and community events, while the first director, Robert Neil, helped guide the center in its beginnings.
The main campus road into Lecanto was named Van Norwick in 1968, honoring the family’s contributions. In 1969, students visited Homosassa Springs, and Beth Williams, one of the original students, remains part of the center today, attending the day program and living in a group home. The Key initially served seven individuals, growing to 20 by the 1970s.
In April 1971, Chet Cole became the second executive director, bringing vision, leadership, and entrepreneurial thinking that helped the Key evolve into what it is today. Early fundraising continued with barbecues and community events, and a thrift store opened in Crystal River in the early 1960s, a model that expanded to five retail stores — four in Citrus County and one in Wildwood.
The Run for the Money, launched in 1976, celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, raising $6,000 in its first year and now surpassing $6 million, logging over 19,000 miles — more than one lap around the United States. In 1978, the Key received a $1.86 million HUD loan to build six homes, marking the beginning of its residential program; today, 60 years later, there are 18 group homes and four apartment complexes serving 145 individuals.
Thanks to countless individuals, organizations, businesses, and clubs, the Key Training Center has grown from serving seven individuals to over 300 adults annually, offering a variety of day and residential services grounded in the cornerstones of kindness, love, dignity, and respect.
I AM the Key to Compassion and Support!
For 15 years, Jenny Emery has been more than a Residential Services Supervisor overseeing 7 group homes—she’s been family.
Jenny says her brother has taught her patience, compassion, and the true meaning of unconditional love. As someone whose brother also attends Key’s day program, her work is deeply personal. For Jenny, this isn’t just a job... it’s home.
Every day, she brings kindness, understanding, and heartfelt support to the people she serves—showing that compassion in action can truly change lives.
For 60 years, dedicated staff like Jenny have been the heart of Key Training Center’s mission, building a legacy of care, inclusion, and hope.
Join us in celebrating Jenny and all those who are part of our I AM the Key campaign—because compassion and support are what make it all possible.
For more than two decades, the Clean Air Bike Ride has helped make a difference in the lives of people served by the Key Training Center—and for Chris Molling, that connection began with a single invitation.
As owner of DRC Sports and a member of the Key Training Center Board of Directors, Chris first became involved through Run For The Money. What started as a five-day journey quickly became a lifelong commitment after he witnessed firsthand the impact the Key has on the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"When you stop and think about where many of our clients would be without the Key, it's powerful," Chris says. "The Key gives people opportunities, activities, friendships, and a place to belong. It makes them active members of our community."
When Chris and DRC Sports took over the Clean Air Bike Ride, they chose the Key Training Center as its beneficiary, helping support programs that empower individuals to live full, meaningful lives.
As we celebrate 60 years of changing lives in Citrus County, we honor supporters like Chris who help ensure that every person has the opportunity to be seen, valued, and included.
Hi, I'm Chris Molling, and I Am the Key to Community
I AM the Key to Giving Back
For 60 incredible years, the Key Training Center has been built by the hearts of those who chose compassion, service, and community. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we honor the lasting legacy of volunteers like Judy Peacock and her late husband Robert — two remarkable people whose dedication helped shape something truly special in Citrus County.
Their story is a powerful reminder that behind every chapter of the Key’s journey are individuals who believed in dignity, opportunity, and giving back.
For six decades, the Key has stood as a symbol of hope, support, and unwavering love — and through the I AM the Key campaign, we celebrate every person whose kindness and service continue to move that mission forward.
Because the legacy of the Key isn’t just in its history… it’s in the lives changed and the people who made it possible.
In April 1962, families in Citrus and Hernando Counties met at the VanNortwick home to begin building support for children with developmental disabilities. Guided by early advocates and community leaders, they formed an organization focused on education, opportunity, and inclusion. That small gathering became the foundation of today’s Key Training Center, a legacy of empowerment that continues more than 60 years later.
On February 7, 1963, Chronicle article described early efforts by Citrus-Hernando Association to form special class for children with developmental disabilities. Led by Harry Van Nortwick, meetings at Women’s Club sparked a movement that grew into Key Training Center over 60 years, continuing inclusion and opportunity, I AM the Key.
In 1963, Citrus County families, leaders, and volunteers began building the foundation of the Key Training Center through early community support and inclusion efforts. From holiday gatherings to local advocates and teachers, the mission of opportunity and care took shape. For 60 years, that spirit has continued—opening doors and empowering lives.
I Am the Key.
In November 1963, Citrus County leaders in the Citrus-Hernando Association—including James McCall, Robert Young, Edward Murphy, E. Van Anderson, and Mrs. Norman Coe—began building a vision of education and opportunity for children with special needs. Their efforts helped lay the foundation for today’s Key Training Center, a legacy of inclusion, support, and empowerment that continues 60 years later.
In February 1963, community leaders with the Citrus County Association for Retarded Children laid the foundation for today’s Key Training Center, creating opportunities for exceptional children and families in Citrus and Hernando Counties. More than 60 years later, their vision lives on through a lasting legacy of empowerment, inclusion, and opportunity.
In 1963, Citrus County officially named the road leading into the Key Training Center Van Nortwick Drive, honoring a legacy of advocacy and compassion for children with special needs. That early vision helped create opportunities for education, support, and independence—values that still guide the Key Training Center today and continue impacting lives every day.
The first Key Training Center thrift store opened in 1965 in downtown Crystal River, starting as a small fundraising effort to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With strong community support, it grew into today’s network of thrift stores, where every purchase and donation continues helping individuals live meaningful, independent, and empowered lives.
The first building on the Key Training Center’s Lecanto campus opened on February 13, 1967, serving seven individuals as a school and workshop for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Built on 40 acres donated by the Orvis family, that single building grew into today’s thriving campus, continuing a nearly 60-year mission of empowerment, dignity, and independence.
On June 29, 1968, neighbors gathered for a community barbecue that helped launch what would become the Key Training Center, sharing food, laughter, and hope. That spirit lives on through the I AM the Key campaign, honoring all who support independence. For 60 years, we’ve built community together stronger always.
Volunteers have always been at the heart of the Key Training Center. In February 1968, community members gathered at VFW Post 4252 in Hernando for a barbecue fundraiser supporting the organization’s early mission. From those grassroots beginnings to today, volunteers continue creating opportunities, giving their time, talents, and support to help individuals live fuller, more independent lives.
In 1970, journalist David S. Arthurs highlighted the Key Training Center as a year-round philanthropic cornerstone of Citrus County. From humble beginnings in borrowed spaces and volunteer support, it has grown into a vital organization empowering adults with developmental disabilities. Now celebrating 60 years, the Key remains a symbol of inclusion, dignity, and community impact.
A historic clipping shows more than 20 Hernando County children traveling a 75-mile round trip daily to attend the Key Training Center, then serving over 40 students near Lecanto. With hopes of expansion, the center offered a warm, individualized program focused on learning and vocational skills like sewing, woodworking, and horticulture. From those early days to today, Key has remained dedicated to dignity, growth, and opportunity for all.
On January 28, 1970, U.S. Representative Bill Chappell presented a $400 donation to help the early Key Training Center in Crystal River purchase teaching machines for students with developmental disabilities. At the time, students were learning hands-on skills like sewing, woodworking, and horticulture to build independence. From those early beginnings to today’s programs and services, the mission remains the same—empowering independence and changing lives.
This historic photo from August 10, 1972, captures one of the earliest milestones in the Key Training Center’s journey as local businessman Ralph Rooks became the first supporter of the Key 100 Club. Pictured with Executive Director Chet Cole and then-President Charlie Dean, the moment symbolized a community coming together to support opportunity, independence, and inclusion—values that continue to define the Key Training Center 60 years later.
In 1975, plans for “On Campus Homes” reflected a vision to create a place where individuals with special needs could live, learn, and thrive—an idea that became Key Training Center. Over 60 years, that mission has continued through a community committed to opportunity, support, and inclusion. Together, we keep opening doors for the future.
Long before today’s programs, the Key brought the community together through events like this barbecue and plant sale, helping lay the foundation for something special. From 1966 to today, volunteers, neighbors, and supporters have made the difference. Every act of support opens doors to opportunity and connection—you are the Key.
Moments like this helped build the Key Training Center. Do you recognize anyone in this photo? Share in the comments. This late ’60s or ’70s holiday program reflects a legacy of inclusion and community. As we celebrate 60 years, we honor those behind it through the I Am the Key.
More than 60 years ago, a small group of parents, volunteers, and advocates in Citrus County gathered to discuss the needs of children with developmental disabilities and create something better. That meeting became the foundation of Key Training Center. Since 1966, it has grown into a place of empowerment, inclusion, and opportunity—helping individuals live fuller, more independent lives.
I Am the Key.
For 60 years, the Key Training Center has been supported by a community rooted in compassion, service, and commitment. At its dedication, the American flag was raised through the generosity of VFW Post 4252, the Citrus County WWI Barracks, and Mrs. Eleanor Eiseman in honor of her father, with Vice Commander Bill Rogers leading the ceremony. The Hernando VFW Post continued its support for decades through donations and fundraising events. 💙 Community has always been the key.
